The term "Crossing" when it
appears in a signal box name immediately conjures images of a level crossing,
but not so on the Caledonian Railway. Here, it generally indicated a remote
crossing point on a single line, between stations.
In the case of Glencruitten, located at a summit between Oban and Connel Ferry, this was an additional crossing point provided in 1903 to increase line capacity. It remained in use until 1966.
The "signal box" was, in fact, fully integrated with the accommodation
for the signalmen. As far as I can establish, the lever frame was located in
the upper part of the bow window arrangement in the centre. The lower area was
probably not glazed originally - this is probably a product of the conversion
of the building into a private residence.
