News reaches me (those of you that use it for hosting are probably already painfully aware) that fotopic is down.

It would appear that Kingston Communications have quite literally pulled the plug on the servers.

Thats not a true statement - there is no evidence that KC have pulled any plugs and it's got little to do with historical signalling

We had all this a year or two back with rumours flying around that it had been shut down. It turned out to simply a server issue and the site was bac after a few days.

Fotopic servers are not communicating - something is unplugged and has been for a while.

I really don't want to get into an argument but ping or tracert failing does not mean the plug has been pulled, it could be lots of things - but what would I know, I only do it for a living.

This is why I keep exact duplicates at home of the photographs I put on line. If Photobucket was to disappear in the same way, I can upload to another site straight away. The main problem would be coming back here to change all the links!

One thing I heard in relation to a similar incident (I think it was actually an account deletion, but same end effect) was that the main problem wasn't the photos being lost - it was the captions that went with them.

A question please.

With Fotopic's alleged access for former account holders to retrieve images apparently due to expire at the end of tomorrow (28/02/13), has anyone tred to gettheir pics back, and been either successful, or more importantly to me, found themseles unable to access the pics?

Since the access being limited to account holders' name ranges, apparently, and secretly(?), becoming an all-embracing A to Z, I've tried accessing a few times, and again since a recent reminder email from fotopic of access ending shortly (which included an encryption of a password together with a link to a weird-looking de-cryption website which seems unclear and convoluted to utilise).
But despite trying to log-in with the correct username and trying as password, both the (dubious?) results of the de-cryption, and my proper password, access continues to be unsuccessful.
I did try a reply to the recent email abut en days ago, descibing my problem, but, no reply.

Does anyone have any comments or tips please?

It took me several attempts to get access and, once I did get through, had problems trying to download the photos into zip files as per the instructions. I managed to find a drop-down list of collections which gave some thumbnails and captions (the latter were what I was really after) but only successfully downloaded the zip files a few days ago, an operation which took absolutely ages on a 20MB connection. These appear to contain only the photos with no captions therefore not a lot of use to me personally as I have at least two copies of all my photos.
