Modern Railway Signalling on British Railways - Second Edition - By JNO. Aitken District Inspector. Date of publication not known but book (5" X 7") is priced at 3/6. A daft question I know but - when mounting an LMS cast iron step tread on a step which way round does it go? Should the LMS be the right way up (i.e. readable) going up the stairs or down the stairs? |

I am busy cataloguing a collection of signalling artefacts. We have five tear-drop shaped brass plates about 2" across with a key hole in them and the legend "treadle" across the top. I assume these were escutcheon plates for some kind of key release - possibly of southern origin? I also have some curved plates engraved with lever numbers that appear to fit above the treadle plates - though this may be coincidence. I have photographs I can email people. Can anyone advise what the exact purpose of these plates was and how I should refer to them in the catalogue? |

Hello, I'm working on a BBC doc, which will cover the Taff Vale Case, and I saw a gallery of signal boxes on the Taff Vale lineon this site. (there is a dedicated page on the gallery - just enter taff vale in the search box and it is the first hit) Does anyone know if any of them are still standing, or if they have been demolished? Many thanks |

Well, not really a service. Just that in 1980 to 1981 I was the Junior Railwayman Signal Lad at the box on Station Road in Billingham. I have some stories to tell, as in that period "we" were still BR, and there were still characters who had started work in the 1930's, does anyone remember 'Stan, Stan the Lampman'? |
